Maybe not the most annoying ever but any
of the 'freecreditreport.com' TV/radio ads
with that lame band (or pretenders) drive
me up a flocking wall the second I hear them.

I can't reach for the mute button fast enough.

A great cure once the songs get in ya head, is
to mentally play some instrumental riff you
like a few times. 'Street Gang' by Ronnie Lane
is great, works every time, mainly because it is
very unlike the offending song. The main
back beat to 'Ice Cream for Crow' by CBH also
fits, and I'm sure you can find a ton of FZ songs
that will stop any thing in it's tracks.

No it isn’t.
What isn't? Whatever you replied to didn't show up here.

In any case my vote is for "The Third Man Theme". That zithering is
definitely an earworm.

I'd also vote for "Tenser said the Tensor" if it was a real thing. Its an
annoying song in Alfred Bester's "The Demolished Man" - his description
of it tells you how to write song that's a guaranteed earworm.

Reminds me of the Greek band that eventually drives the customer mad in Monty Python's "The Cheese Shop" sketch ...

On the subject of earworms, I've had "Pick Me, I'm Clean" stuck in my head for a couple of days. Luckily, I like that song.

The worst I ever had was “I’m HenryVIII, I Am” by Herman’s Hermits. About 6 months ago it was going thru my head every day for 3 weeks! Second verse, same as the first.......!

Way back in pre-historic times (1972) I had a job driving a truck which had an AM radio in it & there was really only one AM Rock station in town so I * had* to listen to it & it seemed they played “ Brand New Key” every 5 minutes! That & “ Garden Party” by Rick Nelson!! No wonder I took up pot smoking for the next 35 years!!!

One of the best ideas I ever had (circa 1991) was to stop listening to pop music radio programs. Add to that a general avoidance of television and I've managed to avoid a LOT of the pop music that has been played to death over the years.

In fact, I've even been able to reverse the saturation and start enjoying some of the music of my youth that I'd grown to hate, like Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin.

The downside of this practice, of course, is that now I may NEVER discover artists like Beyonce, Kanye West, or The Jonas Brothers.

I've just had to learn to be content with that.

...but only annoying because its pretty crap.

One of the worst earworms, though, has to be "Telstar". I'm quite
surprised that nobody else has mentioned it.

Its certainly in the same league as the "Third Man Theme".

The real train wreck with "Telstar" is the timbre. And I'd forgotten
about it.

That *sort* of material in the hands of Ennio Morricone
can be quite amazing. A lot of that is arrangement. And
context.

“Surfin’ Bird” foretold of what was to come! Late in 1963...the end of the “Schmaltz Pop” that ruled the airwaves after Payola....it shook the walls...& then came the British Invasion.....

If you'd come up with that stroke of marketing genius --
no talent to broker, no years of music education (even the free,
albeit barely recommendable public school variety), and hence
VERY low production cost, packaged in small, swiftly produced
units, you wouldn't call "rap" annoying. Only question I have
is, which was the *true* first rap song, "Trouble in River City"
by Robert Preston, or "Trouble Every Day" by Frank Zappa.

Speaking of Bob Preston and annoying songs, gen xers
will remember this one:

I think you mean Ya Got Trouble by Meredith Willson.

And how about Rock Island ("But you gotta know the territory"), which
preceded Ya Got Trouble by a few minutes?
