Post by The old geezerAre any of the recent releases from the FZ vault "really" worth it??? Or
is it just another $$$ grab from the ZFT?? I have the whole YCDTOSA series.
Do any of them surpass that?? I almost.....almost....bought "Buffalo"
a few years back but did not wanna pay $25 for a "one & done". Any advice
would be appreciated.
The OLD Geezer
If I remember right, you're a fan of the Flo and Eddie era, so you
might like the four disc "Carnegie Hall" set (actually I just read
that the 4-disc version is out of print and it's now only available as
a 3-disc version that drops the Persuasion's opening set). One issue
- it's in mono. If you can deal with that, it's a pretty good show
and features a 47 minute long version of Billy the Mountain.
You might also like "Finer Moments" - a collection of outtakes from
the early Mothers. The problem with that one is that if you already
have the YCDTOSA series, Mystery Disc, The Ark (from Beat the Boots),
The Lost Episodes and Caregie Hall, then you've already heard the
majority of the material on this album. The advantage to Finer
Moments is that it collects it all together in one place which makes
for a surprisingly satisfying album.
To answer your general question of whether any of the posthumous
releases are "really worth" buying...yeah, a lot of them are. The
Grand (and Petite) Wazoo live recordings (Imaginary Diseases, Wazoo
and Little Dots) are good. "One Shot Deal" is an interesting
collection of lost tracks. If you haven't gotten the Roxy Movie, it's
well worth having. I recently got the Hot Rats Sessions boxed set and
enjoyed it.
There's lots of stuff. You can't take your money with you, might as
well give it to the Zappa Family Trust and get some good listening out
of it.
