Muffin Men 10th Anniversary Tour, November – December 2000
Founded in 1990 to perform a one-off show to celebrate the 50th birthday of
Frank Zappa, The Muffin Men have established themselves as one of the worlds
leading exponents of Zappa Music. In their ten-year history they have played
nearly 400 shows during more than 25 European tours. They have released 8
CDs, amounting to over 10 hours worth of music. Their ever-changing line-ups
have included 4 original Zappa band members. They have received praise from
other ex Zappa musicians, including guitarist Mike Keneally who quoted them
as being “the best Zappa Band in operation”
They have appeared as special guests at the prestigious Jazz Open Festival
held annually in Stuttgart. They continue to make numerous appearances at
the various Zappa conventions held around Europe, along with radio and TV
appearances in several countries.
Jimmy Carl Black, original drummer with The Mothers Of Invention, will be
special guest on the April tour of England. Jimmy played on more than 15 of
the original Zappa albums, between 1965-81.
They select material from all periods of Zappas career, often shaping the
compositions in to new arrangements and versions, just as you would expect
Zappa to have done it. They can safely say that they have never performed
the same show twice… the German press often write about their typical
British humour, mixed with virtuoso playing. Whether it’s boogie rock or a
strict classical piece, a flashy jazz vamp or a silly doo-wop styling, the
Muffins deliver it with eyebrows raised… just as the composer would have
wanted it.
Ironically the band are less known in their own country than they are on
mainland Europe. This years line-up promises to be one of the best to date,
mixing boogie rock numbers with classy jazz horn arrangements
When Worlds Collide!
In February 2001 they culminate their achievements by collaborating with
members of The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra (RLPO) and members of
The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) to perform a special
concert of Zappa pieces. The classical 10:10 Ensemble, led by Nicholas Cox -
Principle Clarinet at RLPO, is made up from some of the most skilled
orchestra players.
Formed to perform contemporary and rarely heard compositions, the 10:10
Ensemble recently added some Zappa pieces to their repertoire, a move which
prompted Muffin Men founder member Roddie Gilliard to propose the
collaboration. With encouragement from LIPA Head of Music Ian Gardener, the
project has become a three-headed collaboration, with all parties extremely
excited at the prospect. Although there have previously been strictly
classical performances of some of Zappa’s work, this is the first time that
a rock band and classical ensemble have collaborated in such a way, since
Zappa himself performed with Zubin Metha and The Los Angles Philharmonic,
way back in 1970!
Humour does belong in Music!
